Turf Cutting Ceremony Officially Launches £20M+ Sutton Council Project image

Kind & Company have hosted a turf cutting ceremony to mark the official start of building work on a milestone programme by Sutton Council to construct the borough's first new council houses in nearly 30 years.

The £20+ million new build programme will see 93 new homes delivered across three sites – in Alcester Road, Wallington; Fellowes Road, Carshalton; and Richmond Green, Beddington. The new build will offer a mix of one, two and three-bedroomed homes suitable for families, including ten that are wheelchair accessible. Over 90% will be affordable homes.

The ceremony was held on at the site of the former Ludlow Lodge in Wallington was attended by councillors and senior staff from Sutton Council, Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP), representatives of Kind & Company and other project delivery partners.

Announcing the start of the building phase, Cllr Jayne McCoy, Chair of Sutton Council’s housing committee, said: “This truly is a groundbreaking event. It’s been almost 30 years since the last council houses were built in the borough”.

Joint Managing Director of Kind & Company, Tony Battle said: “We are delighted to be working with Sutton Council on this project to deliver quality homes for local people.”

Cllr Jayne McCoy continued, “I am proud that we have demanded high quality design that will provide an excellent living environment for residents, enhances the local streetscape, and maximises the number of affordable homes to rent.”

Each site comprises the following accommodation:

  • Alcester Road, Wallington: 57 flats (including six wheelchair accessible flats). 22 x one bedroom flats,
    19 x two bedroom flats, 16 x three bedroom flats. 49 are for affordable rent and 8 for market rent
  • Fellowes Road, Carshalton: 15 houses (including two wheelchair accessible). 11 x two bedroom houses, 4 x three bedroom houses. All 15 are for affordable rent.
  • Richmond Green, Beddington, 21 houses (including two wheelchair accessible), 12 x two bedroom houses, 9 x three bedroom houses. All 21 are affordable housing units.

The Fellowes Road site is scheduled to be completed in November 2018 with the remaining sites due for completion in December 2018 and early 2019.
