Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Kind & Co. (Builders) Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Emissions reduction targets

To continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we are working towards carbon reduction targets at Board level which we aim to report on in 2024 as the company works towards refining its ESG framework. We have adopted the following carbon reduction targets:

  • Use of HVO fuel on all construction vehicles.

  • Install energy efficient heating/cooling & lighting systems in company offices.

  • Electrification of company vehicles.

  • Use ‘green’ utilities providers for gas and electrics across all our sites and offices.

  • Investigating sustainable materials to assist with the delivery of our projects such as re-duced carbon bricks and concrete.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 153.000 tCO2e by 2028 (assuming similar production levels). This is a decrease of 7.26%.

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2019 baseline.

  • We are ISO14001:2004 accredited and have in place a comprehensive Environmental and Waste Management (EWM) policy and for each project we produce an EWM plan which includes recycling/reuse/reduce targets/KPIs that are monitored monthly.

  • We are working towards having an Environmental Target Plan which covers reduction of negative environmental impacts, energy consumption, waste reduction, local purchasing, water consumption.

  • We have a company Environmental Task Force which regularly reviews our environ-mental status and ways the company can improve on reducing its environmental impact.
  • We hold FORS silver accreditation and our supply chain on our Approved Supplier Da-tabase must have an EWM Policy and Plan and hold at least FORS Silver accreditation.

  • We have signed up to ‘Trees for Cities’ who plant trees to help remove CO2 from the at-mosphere to help us offset our carbon emissions.
  • We are part of the Passivhaus Trust community which promotes carbon net zero con-struction. We are currently building 120 passive house residential units across six sites in London.

  • We use materials which are sustainable, recycled, and rated A/A+ where possible, we source carbon-reduced blocks and bricks and exclusively use FSC-certified timber. We purchase materials from suppliers local to our sites to reduce our carbon footprint. Where we can, we donate surplus to charities or have ‘free Fridays’ when excess mate-rials can be taken by the local community/site operatives.

  • Our water and electric use is metered on site and we compare usage. Heating has ther-mostats and 7-day timers. We implement a switch off policy and use LED luminaries.

  • We provide recycling bins for everyday recycling within the site office and canteen.

  • We segregate our waste to aid us recycling.

  • Waste timber from our construction sites are donated to Community Wood Recycling who divert wood away from waste streams and don’t send any to landfills. They salvage reusable timber back into the resource loop or upcycle the timber into products to re-duce waste emissions.

  • We use water butts on site to collect rainwater and use it for construction purposes and to water the surrounding plants and trees.

  • The washing machines that are installed on site are of the highest energy efficient rat-ing.

  • We use ‘green’ utilities providers to provide the gas and electrics to site.

  • We use carbon neutral paper in our printers across our sites and head office.

These schemes equate to 62.008 tCO2e, a 27.32% decrease against the 2019 baseline, and our intensity metric shows that we have reduced our carbon emission by 31.92% per employee (against the 2019 baseline) and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • We will implement turn style entrance point across all our sites to enable us to capture all business travel to and from site by visitors and operatives which allows us to analyse our CO2 emissions contributing towards our overall reduction plan.
